The De La Riva Guard is a form of open guard with origins in Judo, that was adapted by Jiu Jitsu legend, Ricardo De La Riva. Having a smaller build, De La Riva came up with the technique as a way to keep from getting flattened by heavier training partners. When executed correctly, the De La Riva guard gives a high level of control over opponents, and presents a large number of opportunities for sweeps, chokes, armbars, back takes and transitions.
